Guided Experiences - Options


Mt Timbertop is located in the Victorian High Country on the way from Mansfield to Mt Buller. It's flat top is unmistakable and easily visible from Mt Buller Road. Mt Timbertop provides tranquility and breathtaking views just a short distance from a major road. It’s the perfect half a day guided hike along a well defined track. Watch out for wildlife such as wombats, wallabies and parrots. You can also spot small lizards along the way and enjoy colourful array of wildflowers during the warmer months.

Eagle Peaks are located in the Victorian High Country just out of Howqua Hills Historic Area. It’s a peaceful place to walk to away from the often busy camping areas of Sheepyard Flat with amazing views of Mt Buller’s Southern slopes and surrounding peaks. Enjoy one day of guided hiking through the Alpine National Park. Watch out for wildlife such as wombats and wallabies and hear the Kookaburras laugh as they follow you up the track. This hike requires a reasonable level of fitness. A scramble up a steep scree slope is sure to get your heart racing, but the views are well worth the effort.

Mt Buller’s West Ridge with its rugged terrain provides sweeping views of the surrounding mountains. This side of Mt Buller is very different to the better known North and South sides with its ski runs and mountain bike trails. This is a remote part of the mountain with very different hiking experience. Enjoy one day of guided hiking and a light meal on the summit while watching the colours change as the sun goes down, putting an end to yet another amazing day in the High Country. The West Ridge is a challenging track and requires a good level of fitness, however, you do not need to be an experienced hiker to joins this tour.

The Two Peaks hiking tour will take you across two magnificent mountains, Mt Stirling and Mt Buller. Both mountains are popular winter holiday destinations for many Victorians, but once the snow melts, the ski trails transform to wonderful hiking trails. Enjoy three days of guided hiking through cool forests of the Alpine National Park and over peaks with breathtaking views. The scenery is ever-changing with lush ferns edging the Delatite River, tall Alpine Ash forests, twisted Snow Gums and treeless mountain tops. This hike offers the best of both worlds in accommodation. You will rough it out in a tent the first night and sleep in a cosy lodge the second night. From start of January till the end of April, you can do this entire hike with a daypack only. During November, December and May, you will be required to carry an overnight backpack for the afternoon on day 1 and half of the morning on day 2.

Enjoy two days of guided hiking around Mt Stirling with an overnight camp at Craig’ Hut. Mt Stirling is a popular winter playground offering many kilometres of beautiful cross country ski trails, which in spring, summer and autumn become wonderful hiking trails. During spring and summer, you will enjoy an array of wildflowers covering the hillsides. This hike will take you through forests of towering Alpine Ash, through Snow Gum covered alpine areas and up above the tree line with breathtaking views of the Victorian High Country as you traverse over Mt Stirling’s summit. You will spend a night at Craig’s Hut, which was a movie set built especially for the film The Man from Snowy River in 1982 and was named after the family that lived there. Today it’s one of Victoria’s most iconic places to visit. This hike is achievable for children 13 years plus. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

The Crosscut Saw is located in the Victorian High Country and stands out amongst all the other peaks due to its serrated ridge. This five day hiking tour will take you through some very remote locations with breathtaking views. This hike is challenging, at times demanding with steep climbs, rock scrambles and river crossings, but it’s very rewarding in more ways then you can imagine. It’s about testing yourself physically and mentally. Every day is different and comes with new challenges. The experience you will take away from this hike will stay with you forever. This is Victorian High Country at it’s best, with endless views and the most incredible sunrises and sunsets you’ll ever see.

Physically demanding and mentally challenging, this hike will reward you with not only breathtaking views of Mt Buller’s Southern slopes and surrounding peaks, but more importantly with personal achievement. Only two hiking tours per season and five participants per tour are available.

Craig's Hut is one of Victoria's most iconic places and a must to see for anyone visiting the Victorian High Country. The team will drive you through a beautiful Alpine Ash forest to the start of the hiking track. The hiking track is well maintained. It winds up towards Craig’s Hut through a forest of towering trees that gradually change to Snow Gums. Regular stops along the way provide an opportunity to take in your surroundings and to enjoy the views. Upon reaching Craig’s Hut you will have free time to explore this wonderful icon and to snap a few memorable pics. Grab a cup of coffee, tea or juice and a yummy pastry, sit back, relax and soak up the views. About an hour later, you will retrace your steps back down the track where the base camp manager will be waiting to transport you back to Telephone Box Junction via Howqua Gap, completing the full Circuit Road circle. Along the way you will enjoy more breathtaking views of the Victorian High Country. This hike is suitable for families with children age six and above. Child safety seats (please bring your own if your child requires one).

Stirling Experience is a fantastic overnight hike for families with children nine years and older. It is a great introduction for children to overnight hiking and a wonderful opportunity to spend quality family time in the beautiful Victorian High Country. Spend two wonderful days hiking around Mt Stirling Alpine Resort with a guide who’s very passionate about the High Country. You will hike through Alpine Ash forests and amongst majestic Snow Gums. Enjoy the wildflowers that line the path and keep an eye out for lyre birds. Look out for bugs and beetles and butterflies and just simply enjoy your surroundings. At the end of the day, from the summit of Mt Stirling, watch the sun set beyond the horizon. This is a fully supported hike. All hiking equipment and water will be dropped off at the campsite.

Enjoy three days of guided snowshoe hiking around the beautiful Mt Stirling and Clear Hills. This is a true winter adventure that will take you from well maintained cross country ski trails of Mt Stirling to the unmaintained backcountry trails of the Victorian High Country. On this hike you will enjoy beautiful Alpine Ash forests, majestic Snow Gums, breathtaking views and high country huts, including Craig’s Hut, which was a movie set built especially for the film The Man from Snowy River in 1982 and was named after the family that lived there. Today it’s one of Victoria’s most iconic places to visit. This adventure is physically and mentally demanding, therefore requires good level of fitness and mental strength. You will be required to wear snowshoes and carry an overnight backpack for the entire hike. The backpack will weigh between 21 to 25 kilograms. You will also need warm, waterproof winter clothing.

Nestled amongst the mountains, on the banks of the Howqua River where Fourteen Mile Creek flows in, is Ritchie’s Hut. Is was built by Robert, the son of Geoffrey Ritchie, with the aid of Fred Fry in late 1947 as a fishing hut. Geoffrey Ritchie and Antoinette Ritchie first moved to “Delatite” near Mansfield in 1902 and bought “Wonnangatta Station” in 1914. Enjoy two days of guided hiking along the Howqua River in the beautiful Victorian High Country where the smell of earth and eucalyptus is so strong, it takes over your senses. Breathe the clean fresh air and tune in to hear the numerous birds that call the Victorian High Country their home. Whether you are a day hiker wanting to try multi-day hiking or you have never hiked before, this hike is for you. It is an easy undulating walk along the banks of the Howqua River. This hike does not require a great deal of fitness and as long as you are prepared to carry an overnight backpack, you will have no problem completing this hike with a smile on your face.
