High Country Horses is nestled in the foothills of Merrijig. They have been in the area for over 40 years taking trail rides up into the breathtaking mountains for 29 years.

With horses to suit all level of riders they have the flexibility to adjust the ride according to ability. Rides range from two hours to multi days. Their extended camp out rides travel up the the Delatite River, over the summit of Mt Stirling to Craig’s Hut, taking in the breathtaking views along the way as they pass through forests of majestic Alpine Ash and twisted, gnarled, multi-coloured Snow Gums.

For the more adventurous spirits, you will ride into the beautiful Howqua Valley and explore the surrounding areas of Mt Howitt, Mt Magdala, the Bluff and beyond. Shorter rides, travel the foothills of Merrijig taking in areas featured in ‘The Man From Snowy River II”, splash through the creeks and enjoy the serenity of the natural bush.

The horses are tried and true mountain horses as honest as the day is long. As well as having a keen interest and understanding of horses, having worked with them all their lives, they have a passion for the High Country and integrity of the environment in which they are privileged to operate. They take great pride in sharing the magic of the High Country.

Departing from Mirimbah, you will head up the Delatite River, crossing the river 15 times, providing some cooling relief on a hot summer’s day. You will travel amongst the towering Mountain Ash and luscious tree ferns making your way up the river spur through the Alpine Ash to the gnarled Snow Gums and alpine meadows on the summit of Mt Stirling before making your way to base camp at Razorback.

The next day you will ride to Mt Stirling, stopping to take in the breathtaking views and visit Craig’s Hut. After a relaxing lunch stop, you are Razorback bound where the drinks are iced and the campfires ready. On the last day you ride home to Merrijig via Mt Number 3 and Burnt Hut Spur with a relaxing lunch stop along the way.

You will depart from Merrijig Lodge on Saturday morning traveling by vehicle halfway up Mt Stirling to Telephone Box Junction. From here you will ride through the majestic Alpine Ash into the marked contrast of the twisted, multi-coloured Snow Gums, up over the summit of Mt Stirling and on to Craig’s Hut where you can enjoy the magnificent views over lunch.

From here you will trek down to camp at Razorback where the camp is set up, the billy on the boil and the drinks on ice. After a hearty meal you can relax around the fire and enjoy the evening. In the morning, after a bush breakfast, you will ride out to Mt Number 3 over the rugged ridgeline of Razorback, past the Pinnacle and Mt Number 3 Refuge Hut. You will then descend from the Snow Gums down through the Woolly Butts to the fern gullies below. After lunch it’s back on the horses for the ride back to Merrijig.
