Winter in the High Country
Hot chocolate, cold noses and a warm welcome
Once the snow falls, there are even more activities to enjoy in the High Country. And winter is a great time to savour spectacular views across a white landscape.
Skiing and boarding
With over 300 hectares of spectacular skiable terrain, Mt Buller has something to offer skiers and snowboarders of all ages and capabilities - from gentle groomed slopes to exhilarating off-piste tree runs. With 80km of groomed trails, three terrain parks, a 100m earthformed halfpipe and a boardercross course, there’s plenty to keep you entertained. Mt Buller offers ski and snowboard lessons and full equipment and clothing rental, so all you have to do is turn up!
Cross-country skiing
Mt Stirling offers a different alpine experience. Cross-country skiing trails trace the mountaintop. Gear hire, instruction and guides are availableon Mt Stirling at Telephone Box Junction (beginning of Circuit Road). But remember to dress appropriately- cross-country skiing is warm work but the weather can change quickly.
Snowshoeing
Nothing is quite as special as snowshoeing through an alpine forest in the snow. Snowshoes offer access to all terrains in the winter and in recent years, snowshoe technology has come a long way with lightweight, easy to manoeuvre snowshoes now the norm. It’s easy to learn too. For information about gear hire, trails and guides, contact the Mansfield Visitor Information Centre on 1800 039 049.
Kids in the snow
Winter is a great time for kids in the High Country. And you don’t have to board or ski to have fun. Make your own snowman, have a snowball fight, toboggan down a gentle slope and when you’ve got rosey cheeks, head inside for a frothing hot chocolate - marshmallows optional.
Winter in the valleys -an extra warm welcome
This is the best time of year to enjoy a local spa, a long lunch or leisurely wine tours in the scenic valleys of the High Country. Book in for a weekend retreat and you’ll be treated to atmospheric mists across the valleys, roaring open fires and an extra warm welcome.
